Talk to your bishop about serving in the temple
"I promise you that the Lord will bring the miracles He knows you need as you make sacrifices to serve and worship in His temples."
- President Russell M. Nelson
What will I be doing as an ordinance worker?
All ordinance workers receive "line assignments" which include everything from greeting patrons at the recommend desk, providing directions to patrons at assigned stations within the temple, assigning lockers, performing initiatory ordinances and working at the initiatory desk, presenting and receiving patrons at the veil, officiating in endowment sessions and more...
What is the time commitment?
Ordinance worker shifts are broken into 4 shifts throughout the day:
Morning 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Midday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Afternoon 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Evening 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Workers are required to attend a preparation meeting 40 minutes prior to each shift and to work at least one shift per week.
Will I be able to take vacation and travel?
Yes! Working in the temple does require a weekly commitment of time but taking time off for vacations and other travel is not a problem at all. The temple provides a Worker Portal to facilitate substitution requests and asks that workers obtain substitutes for their missed shifts. If a temple worker is ill, they simply ask that you send your shift coordinator a message to notify them.
Are days and assignments flexible?
When a temple worker is recommended to the temple, they have an opportunity to visit with a member of the temple presidency and discuss their schedule and availability. Once a schedule is assigned, it does not fluctuate week to week. Regarding assignment flexibility, assignments rotate approximately every 3 months and workers can discuss specific concerns or preferences with their respective shift coordinators
Will I have to memorize my assignment?
It's important that members interested in working in the temple understand that not all the assignments require heavy memorization or put you in uncomfortable positions where you have to perform (think SL Temple). Virtually all of the assignments that require extensive dialogue (initiatory, veil, name issue) now have a card posted with the verbiage to reference. This has made serving as an ordinance worker much less stressful and accessible to everyone.
